Microphone Attack:
Niney The Observer 1974 - 1978
(Blood & Fire)

This latest anthology of the rise of the dance hall deejays, primarily features the works of the late I-Roy along with U-Roy, Big Youth, Dellinger, and Ranking Trevor. This Niney The Observer produced compilation highlights the phenomenon and rise to prominence of the sound system disc jockeys that created a genre of Reggae music out of what was no more than an emcee role. Of those who championed this style, one of the most prolific was I-Roy, a.k.a. Roy Samuels, whose success seemed to mirror the consistent hit-making ability Dennis Brown as evidenced on the dub versions on this disc. Standouts tracks include "Sister Maggie Breast," "Jah Come Here," "Step On The Dragon," and "Camp Road Skanking." This is an extraordinary piece for your Reggae archive.
- L.V.

Albert Tomlinson a.k.a Beenie Bird
(Strong & Free)

Singer/songwriter Albert Tomlinson is on the scene with a style of Reggae that is reminiscent of the Rock Steady era, a time when he started to hone his skills. As an ambassador of the music, Beenie Bird has re-emerged on the Reggae scene in Canada on a quest to win over new audiences. This style of music is most likely to capture the ears of the baby boomer generation, as it is a departure from the popular type of Reggae heard today. Tomlinson, with his skills as a veteran in the business, utilizes the saxophone driven Lover Rock sound that seems to be a welcomed element amongst that more mature group of fans. This solo debut is a good effort with its positive vibes and Jimmy Cliff style tracks, like "Working One," and "Virtue" and "When Will I Win." - L.V.

Ninjaman
Reggae Anthology
Anything Test Dead
(VP)

This 2 CD set features a DJ who is arguably of one of the best and most underrated DJs in dancehall. The orginal Front-Teeth Gun-Pon-Teeth Don Gorgon, Ninjaman, was among the best live performers in dancehall. But his reputation as a rude boy cemented by songs like "My Weapon" and "Murder Dem," may have slowed his mass appeal. This anthology, a 2-CD set may lead some reassesment. Over 30 tracks are featured on this CD. Among them are his most popular hits, "Cover Me" featuring Tinga Stewart, "Time Is Serious" featuring long-time clash rival, Shabba Ranks and Admiral Tibett, a pleasant surprise. His concerns weren't just with who's the hardest in the dancehall but also included social and political concerns. Check out "Mandela Come", about Nelson Mandela's trip to Jamaica.

Ninjaman, in '97 turned over a new leaf from a life as a "bad man" and became baptised as a Christian becoming Brother Desmond for a brief period.

Various
The Front Line
(Virgin/EMI)

This 4-CD set is a journey through the many sides of reggae for true afficianados. Many artists presented in this compilation are an integral, even if lesser known part of the history of the music. The compilation is brokendown into four parts: 1. Roots & Reality; 2. Love & Harmony; 3. Dangerous DeeJays; and 4. Dub Encounters. Artists featured on Roots & Reality are The Gladiators, Culture, Gregory Isaacs, Abyssinians, Mighty Diamonds, Johnny Clarke, Twinkle Brothers and Delroy Washington. Love & Harmony (CD #2) features many of the same artists but with a few additions: Keith Hudson, Althea & Donna who made "Uptown Ranking" a huge hit, and the Paragons who orginated "Time Is High" which became a mega hit for Blonde. Dangerous Deejays (CD#3) features the godfathers of dancehall, DJs: U Roy, I Roy, Big Youth and others such as Tapper Zukie, U Brown and more. Dub Encounters (CD #4) provide some nice dub tracks featuring some of the same artists.

IWER GEORGE
Iwer & Family Compilation 2 (JBS Records)

Iwer is back again with his upbeat style on this album."Let Me See Your Hand" and "Road March Bacchannal" has a lot of bacchannal. The jump up beats are wicked. My favourite track is "Dorothy." Check out The Baron on track #12. The last track is sure to make you homesick. You start getting flashbacks of all those special moments you experienced when you are there.Get this album.
- Tony Eno

SHADOW
Just For You (JBS Records)

Congratulations go out to the High Priest ,The 2001 Soca Monarch, Second Place runner up Calypso King, and Road March King -- Shadow. Winston Bailey aka Shadow did what no other artist has done in one year. He "cleaned up" taking Trinidad by storm. Two of his songs: "Trager" and "Yuh Looking For Horn" had Trinidad in his hands this this year. Both are the first two featured on the CD.The rest is gravy.

Various Artists
Tixx/Blaze (Greensleeves Records)

Whether you love Dancehall music for its catchy hooks, the lyrical gymnastics, the unique phrasing of the "riddim riders," or the pulsating beats, look no further because it is all here. Sizzla, Beenie Man, Mr. Vegas, Elephant Man, Ward 21, Lady Saw, Mad Cobra, Lexxus, and an outstanding cast of other deejays are here to cater to your dance hall pleasures, with 22 tracks and two phenomenal rhythms. Guaranteed to get many hands in the air, these rhythms, the "Tixx" and "Blaze," keeps your Dancehall pulse at a spirited level of animation. Some explicit contents.

Mr. Isaacs
Gregory Isaacs (Blood & Fire)

Gregory Isaacs is enjoying a renaissance lately with many of his tracks being re-released for fans who missed it the first time around. This one from the Blood Fire label features sveral of Gregory's well-known hits such as the "Slavemaster", "Mr. Brown", "Take a Dip featuring Dillenger and "Conversation." This 14 track CD is well worth re-discovering once again. Gregory Isaacs is truly one of reggae's most enduring singer songwriters.
- K.W.

BUSHMAN
Higher Ground (Greensleeves/Nuff)

Bushman is back with another solid album. This roots/dancehall singer who draws a lot comparisons to Luciano and Dennis Brown should draw even more fans with this 16 track effort than his previous album which insiders rated as one of the best reggae releases at the time. One of the refreshing things about this--his third on the U.K.-based Greensleeves, is its classic yet contemporary feel. A kind of vibe that grows on you with each spin. That coupled with its righteous, politically and socially concerned lyrics makes it a winner. Favourite tracks include "Bun Fire," "Away Home (Yadd)," "Government Robbery," "Nahh Go Fah," and "Love of The Heart." A treat for the conscious dancehall crowd.
- K.W.

MORGAN HERITAGE
More Teachings... (VP Records)

Ready or not, here they come. These young lions of the Reggae music business, armed in their lyrical Gideon suits, continue to fortify their place amongst the outstanding Reggae bands of past and present. The material here is solid and the delivery is as sweet as it gets as they spread their soulful and rootsy Reggae vibes. The harmonies and elements of the music, in many ways, are a reflection of that substance which the legendary Bob Marley and the Wailers exhibited at the peak of their success. Morgan Heritage's impassioned sense of urgency and commanding delivery is tempered with a touch of rap and Dancehall deejaying, which propels them even more in terms of completeness. The band also makes it apparent that they can soothe you on the soulful R & B side, with a beautiful ballad called "Always On My Mind." Standouts include the mega hit "Down By The River," "What We Need Is Love," "Kebra And The Fetha," and "Jah Seed." Rest assured, the good vibes do not stop here. This one is firing on all cylinders.
- Lynden Vassell

UB40
The Very Best of UB40 1980 - 2000 (Virgin Records)

This compilation exemplifies all that this group from Birmingham, England has meant to Reggae music. This anthology of memorable hits which includes "Red Red Wine," "Kingston Town," and "Can't Help Falling In Love, " illustrate why the group has lasted this long in the business. While showcasing many previously recorded tunes and putting their distinct flavour to them, UB-40 have become one of the world's most popular Reggae ambassadors thereby taking the music to a varied audience and into the mainstream of popular music. The band is tight and the quality is all good. Original materials like "Bring Me Your Cup," "One In Ten," and "Sing Our Own Song" are superb tracks which will always keep UB-40 in the ranks of solid Reggae bands. This is definitely a worthy collector's item.
- Lynden Vassell

BIG YOUTH
Natty Universal Dread (Blood and Fire)

Big Youth, born Manley Augustus Buchanan, is truly a Reggae phenomenon and a voice that represents a vital part in the development of the genre of Dancehall, within Reggae music. With a style previously referred to as toasting, Big Youth became one of the premiere voices of the dancehalls, as he chanted truths and rights over solid reggae dance rhythms. Blood and Fire captures this rise superbly in this three disk compilation to give audiences a piece of Reggae history. The dubs to which Big Youth chants over are previous chart toppers which ruled the airwaves throughout the 1970's. This collection is a must have in terms of its archival value and rhythmic qualities. Tracks like "Hit The Road Jack," "Hotter Fire," "Sky Juice," "Is Dread In A Babylon," "Mama Look," and "Reggae Phenomenon," illustrates how this artist was able to win a large following with his skillful adaptations. This one comes very well recommended.
- L.V.

UNSTOPPABLE PONG
Not Guilty (Alaska)

At the outset of this disk I had looked forward to seeing another home-grown talent, especially with a name described as being unstoppable. The accompanying music to which Pong's exhibits his Dancehall vibe is all original. Unfortunately, the overall material, does not meet the expectations due to its content. The track called "Cash Flow" shows promise, as does Pong. The "badman/wicked man" lyrics, however, is not substantial enough or appealing enough to take Pong to that other level.
- L.V.

BERES HAMMOND
Music Is Life (VP Records)

Beres has done it again. He has struck gold with this, another, outstanding album. One thing which has been evident throughout his career is the consistency in style and substance. This newest release is loaded with that style of music which has kept Beres' songs circulating at the top of the charts. Songs of love, relationships, and social consciousness are a mainstay. Tracks like "They Gonna Talk," "Ain't It Good To Know," "Dusty Road," "Those Were The Days," and a superb collaborative Latin-flavoured R & B track with Wyclef Jean, called "Dance 4 Me." The most impressive thing is that it does not end there. The rest of the album flows smoothly as Hammond's soulful magnetism shines through with the sweet accompanying reggae rhythms. This one is for keeps.
- Lynden Vassell

VARIOUS

The Biggest Ragga Dancehall Anthems
(Greensleeves)

This one should be appropriately called Dancehall delights as it features some of the hottest tracks of Y2K. This double CD set is a definite keeper for Dancehall music fans as it features all the giants of the dancehall scene today. Some explicit lyrics on board but the likes of the "fireman" Capleton, Beenie Man, Bounty, Mr. Vegas, Sizzla, Elephant Man, Red Rat, Lexxus, and Degree add enough intensity to sweeten the flavour. Not to mention a revisit with Punanny "riddim" medley, and Hawkeye slang of the "Twingy Twanga." "Cool nuh Man!" Some good vibes for your dancehall pleasure.

BABY CHAM
Wow ...the Story
(Artist Only ! Records)

And in this corner, one of Jamaica's hottest Dancehall music sensation, the one and only, BABY CHAM!!!!!!! In this impressive double CD debut, Baby Cham , with his mission to take the music to another level, displays a duality never before seen coming from another dancehall artist on a first time release. One CD features catchy cutting edge dancehall tracks which have propelled him to the forefront of the elite artists of this genre. The other CD is a marked departure from what his hardcore dancehall followers would expect. The second disk is clearly a crossover album which is bubbling with R&B and Hip-hop appeal. While many of the tracks on CD #1 have been previously released, anthemic songs like "Man & Man," "Babylon Bwoy," and "Ghetto Pledge" are chart topping quality productions designed to keep Cham's vibes flowing throughout the dancehall scene. Cham, with David Kelly playing an integral role in this production, shows that he can bounce with the best on both the Dancehall and Hip-hop scenes. Watch for tracks like "High Rollers," "Heading To The Top," "More," and "Flossing Everyday," to make some headway on the R&B/Hip-hop charts as Cham enlists the likes of Shaggy, Hope, Foxy Brown, Mr. Easy and more. This release covers the full spectrum of street level vibes with something for everyone. Baby Cham shines. For the hardcore dancehall supporters, the track with Bounty Killer called "Another Level," will take you there - to that other level. - Lynden Vassell

LUCIANO
Luciano Live
(VP Records)

The "Cultural One" is found here in fine form thrilling his audience in London England, as he delivers Jah's message. If the medium is the message, you can not go wrong with this messenger. Luciano continues to cement his place in Reggae music as one of its icons. With tracks like "Never Give Up My Pride," "How Can You," "It's Me Again Jah," and Messenger, the music is gold. This hit parade will leave you with a thirst for more. - L.V.

VARIOUS
Gunz in Da Ghetto
(VP Records)

Once again the Morgan family is at the core of some conscious messages with a solid, sweet, reggae rhythm as the backdrop. Executive produced by Denroy Morgan, this compilation features (his children), Morgan Heritage alongside Bounty Killer, Marley Brothers, Junior Kelly & King David, Anthony B, Sugar Minott, Denroy himself, and a handful of talented up and coming artists. While a dozen of the 14 track share the same rhythm, each artist add their personal touch, admirably, to make this album come through nicely. - L.V.

THE FRONT LINE
Various Artists
(Virgin Records)

This compilation goes back in time to earlier Roots Reggae music of the 1970's, and is heavily rooted in Dub. The drum and bass style is prevalent, as is the toasting of I Roy and U Roy, the smoothness of the Cool Ruler, the 'rootsy' vocal richness of Culture and the magnetic pull of the Mighty Diamonds. Music of this calibre was what put reggae on the front line and an international stage. Also featured are The Gladiators and Johnny Clarke, once one of Jamaica's favourite vocalists, on this impressive roster. Tracks such as these are bound to generate interest in the original albums and artists. - L.V.

REAL SEX 2000
Various Artists (VP Records)

Here's one for the "yardcore" dancehall aficionados, as the bad boys of Dancehall music take you on a serious ride with the intercourse and orgasm 'riddims.' Along with the 14 standout tracks is a second bonus disk with the Hot Mega Mix. Sean Paul & Mr. Vegas kicks off with the catchy hook of "Tiger Bone," while Frankie Sly, Beenie Man, Lexxus, Spragga Benz, T.O.K., Tanto Metro &Devonte, Buccaneer, and more fills all of your hardcore demands. With its "sexplicit" lyrics, and content, this one is definitely not for minors. - L.V.

YOGIE
Miracles
(FiWi Music)

Ladies and gentlemen,... introducing Yogie. Here is a rising star, and nephew of Beres Hammond, loaded with crossover appeal. The silky vocal styling could easily capture Pop/Rhythm & Blues audiences worldwide. Yogie, who is also a producer and songwriter, possesses the same kind of vocal richness of Maxi Priest. If this album is any indication, he is poised to capture a strong following. The album itself is an easy flowing one with smooth reggae tracks like "As It Is," "Never Give Up," and "Here Again." Suffice to say, in terms of Yogie's debut album, "So Far So Good." This is definitely an artist to watch for.
- Lynden Vassell

VINCENT NAP
Good Things Come
(First Time Records)

For those of you who are unfamiliar with this artist, you can be certain that there are, indeed, good things to come. Mixed and recorded in London, England, this album is akin to the style of many of the U.K. reggae recordings. The sound is crisp, clean, and easy-flowing. The smooth, solid vocals are accompanied by sweet harmonies and durable musical arrangements. Nap and crew utilizes real instruments, including horns to provide you with an "irie" reggae flavour throughout the album. Naturally, comparisons will be made with Reggae superstar, Cocoa Tea. Standouts include tracks such as "Every Day Everyday'," "Crazy Woman," "Mystic," and "Moment Of Madness."- L.V.

LENN HAMMOND
Lenn Hammond
(Fi Wi Music)

In his self-titled collection, Lenn Hammond has put forth an overall strong reggae album. Hammond, another reggae artist on the rise, demonstrates the ability to bend your ear and draw you closer to his art. He has surfaced previously on other reggae compilations with singles like "Get Up And Shine," and "Just The Other Night." Here, he has put it all together. This album primarily finds Hammond soothing his listeners with both conscious and mellow reggae tracks. Also featured is a wicked dancehall track called "Work Me." This album, and tracks like "It's Over," and "Never Give Jah Up," confirms that he is a capable performer. Check it out.

THE MEDITATIONS
For The Good Of Man
(Heartbeat)

This duo of Winston Watson and Danny Clarke, long time veterans in the reggae music business, has continued to provide their own unique flavour to this genre. Their sound seems to be tempered more towards a light radio playing style of production. It is a studio clean sound but short on that heavy pulsed drum and bass driven roots reggae which I, personally, would expect from these veterans. They are, however, true to their reggae foundations in their material, which has not deviated from earlier recordings. The harmonies on tracks like "Woman Woman" and "Rocking In America" are superb. Long time followers of this group will be happy to see their name back in circulation
.- L.V.

ELEPHANT MAN
Comin' 4 You!
(Greensleeves)

"Blouse & Skirts!", "Mind him nuh 'tump' you." Scare Dem Crew's Elephant Man is coming for you with everything he has got, (profanities and all). Elephant Man features Mr. Vegas, Ward 21, and Beenie Man, with a barrage of dancehall hits which includes "Truth Hurts," "Mama," and "Out Of Order." If you love dancehall music with a touch of hip-hop flavour, this one's for you.- L.V.

WAYNE WONDER
da Vibe
(Artists Only! Records)

If you know about Dancehall Reggae music, then you will recognize this artist as one of this genre's most prolific artist. As a consummate dancehall singer, Wayne Wonder does not disappoint. This album can attest to that. Although most of these tracks have previously been released as singles or on various compilations, it is good to see them all with new selections on one album. Instant standouts of the latest assortments includes "Keep Them Coming," "Blazing," which features Surprise, "Ready To Ride," and the follow-up to that rhythm, "Criss Pack Of Boots," featuring Bounty Killer. One does not have to be a dancehall fan to enjoy this album. Wayne Wonder is giving you "The Best."- L.V.

RITCHIE SPICE
Universal
(Heartbeat)

You have seen Pliers (of Chakademus & Pliers) and Spanner Banner in the spotlight. Now another brother of the Bonner family is charged and ready to put his stamp on the reggae charts. Richie Spice with his unique sound is providing excitement in the dancehall on this debut album, showing that he can do it all. He sings and deejays on this album produced by Pliers. The varied reggae rhythms cover a wide range to illustrate his versatility. Ritchie, though not as polished as his brothers, holds his own with some strong tracks like "Earth a Run Red," "Love is the Way," and an exceptional track called "Living Ain't Easy." Run the track Selector

Reggae Hits: 27
( Jet Star )

If this is not the sweetest of all previous reggae compilations, then it definitely ranks way up near the top. For reggae music lovers, having this album is the equivalent of a kid in a candy store. The pleasure seems endless. The amazing thing about it is the fact that the majority of the tracks can easily fill any top ten reggae charts worldwide. The all-star line-up of artists is as solid as ever and the man who brought you "If Love's So Nice," Junior Kelly, is back. Kelly and Peter unnigale both offer thrilling double plays. "Donna Marie" is a sweet surprise to this line-up. If you do not already have this CD, then "a gaze yu a gaze." - Lynden Vassell

SYLFORD WALKER & WELTON IRIE
Lambs Bread International
( Blood & Fire )

You 'luv' drums? You luv bass? Horns? Roots music with a bit of toasting?
If you answered yes to any of these questions then you will love this re-issue. When you hear Walker on vocals, you will wonder why it is that you may not have heard from him before or why there was so few of his recordings. He has a cool rootsy style of phrasing which in some instances are reminiscent of a young Winston Rodney (Burning Spear). This duo sounds as good today as it did in the late 1970s. Mixed at King Tubby's studio, each alternate track contains the deejay toasting format of Welton Irie on a dub version of the previous track. The combinations are superbly done with Welton Irie toasting the propulsive rhythms in the style most popularized by the likes of U-Roy, Big Youth, and I-Roy. With the recent dub music revival, this album represent an ideal piece to that resurgence. Standouts include the title track, "Ghettoman Corner," and "Give Thanks and Praise To Jah Jah." This is a solid re-release. - L.V.

BUJU BANTON
Unchained Spirit
(Epitaph/Hellcat Records )

Mark Myrie better known as Buju Banton, has returned with the classic type of sound which propelled him to the forefront of reggae/dancehall music. This time around he has added a new dimension. He has reached back to his roots background to create a spiritually loaded album with an aim to reach a wider audience base. This album has a little bit of everything for everyone on this showcase which clearly demonstrates his goal to widen his international fan support. There is an element of jazz in his lament for war-torn Sudan; a component of ska; a pop rock sounding track, "No More Misty Days" and vintage roots reggae and dancehall songs to fulfill your musical pleasure. Buju has enlisted Gramps (of Morgan Heritage), Rancid, and reggae superstars Luciano, Beres Hammond, and Stephen Marley to create some outstanding combinations on an overall superb album.- Lynden Vassell

VARIOUS ARTISTS
Greensleeves Rhythm Album #4
(Greensleeves )

This one is pure unadulterated bad boy dancehall music, if hardcore vibes of this genre can be described as such. Punches are not pulled, words not minced and therefore this one comes with the parental advisory of the explicit lyric. The 20 tracks featured here, with the electronic beats, are highlighted by the bad boys of dancehall with a superstar lineup which features Beenie Man, Lexxus, Mr. Vegas, Mad Cobra, Madd Anju, Ward 21, and more. If you are a die-hard fan of dancehall music and not put off by the unabashed aggressive content, then this may suit your style.- L.V.

WAILING SOULS
Equality
( Musicblitz)

Grammy award nominee Wailing Souls, Winston "Pipe" Matthews and Lloyd "Bread" McDonald are back in full swing with what many will agree is their best album yet. With Bobby Digital on board for the mixing and Sly & Robbie amongst a slew of talented musicians, Pipe and Bread has found the magic needed to constantly keep you rocking. As long-time suppliers of conscious roots music to the international marketplace spanning three decades, the Wailing Souls have landed a winner. A truly solid follow-up to their soundtrack for the movie Cool Runnings. Songs like "Equality," "Foundation," "Back Of My Hands," and "Down On Your Knees" are all top notch rootsy tracks with sweet melodies designed to set you in motion. A strickly good vibes a flow.- L.V.

SIZZLA
Bobo Ashanti
(Nuff)

The conscious dread is back with his fiery uplifting rasta teachings in the dancehall reggae music genre. This time around there is the unmistakable soulful R&B arrangements there in his first crossover attempt to build musical bridges. The undeniable depth of message is still ever present as Sizzla remains a force on the roots/dancehall.The Bobo roots are put forth with consistent uplifting messages and tracks like "The World" and "Must Rise" are poised to become anthems. "Whether Or Not" and "This Day" are also tracks destined to capture the attention of many with its crisp soulful arrangement. This is dancehall music with a (positive) purpose. The more you listen to this album, the more you appreciate the beauty of it.- L.V.

PETER TOSH
Live at The One Love Peace Concert
( JAD Records )

Dubbed as the most powerful performance of his career, this album recorded in 1972, has captured the original bad boy of the Wailers in hair-raising fiery form. With as commanding a voice that reggae audiences, past and present, have ever heard, Tosh threw many a stones in what he saw as Jamaica's political glass house and on a larger scale the "Babylon System." The venue was at Jamaica's largest stage in front of its top officials. The Steppin Razor himself could not have found a more ignitable situation on this historic occasion to let loose his unforgettable fire. Tosh became a force in reggae illustrating mass appeal of revolutionary proportions with anthems like "Equal Rights," "Get Up Stand Up," "Burial," and "Legalize It." This album is an experience on a grand scale.- L.V.

CAPLETON
More Fire
(VP Records)

"More Fire!" That's the latest rallying cry by dancehall massives these days, sparked by its most controversial DJ, at the moment, Capelton. Backed by the riddim twins Sly and Robbie among others--Capleton aka the Fireman--unleashes a torrent of fire and brimstone lyrics at anyone who doesn't have a "clean heart or clear conscience" in this 17 track CD. From the get-go, tracks like "Danger Zone," "Who Dem," "More Prophet," the self-described prophet is intent on trodding the land to stamp out "corruption and slackness." But it is his righteous rage against lawless gun men on "Jah Jah City" that is my favourite track. There are many more tracks that are also enjoying multiple spins in the dancehall including "Hands Off" and "Love is Coming at You" which features Anthony Red Roze, Anthony Malvo and Terry Linen on vocals.- K. W.

VARIOUS
Greensleeves Reggae Sampler 21

There are other djs well-represented here including Ward 21 ("Shake It" and "Y2K Style") and Hawkeye ("Money Making Guy.") Not to be outdone, singers like Luciano steps up with "Jah is My only" as does Bushman with "Love Of The Heart.

MACHEL MANTANO
2000 Young To Soca
(Masuso)

Machel has certainly showed that since he entered the Soca race, there is not stopping him. He's definitely kept up the pace with consistent and top quality music for his fans. This year's album is named after his first big hit "Young To Soca." His record sales have surpassed every other Soca album from the Caribbean for the year 2000. Some stores boast of selling over one hundred copies per week. For my money it is the best Album for the year. This album has a lot of "get up and dance songs" to the collection including favourites such the title track, "Pressure," "Real Unity and "Wrecker." Keep up the good work Machel.- Tony Eno

TALL PREE

Tall Pree is quite a showman and is well known for his hard hitting vibe in Grenada. He is also a very good Raggae artist and always aims to please.
This record is a compilation of two artist Tall Pree and Tangler.
As for Tangler, his music is upbeat with a sweet Calypso vibe mix with Chutney. Unfortunately, some of the DJs here in Toronto to visit the Islands to broaden their minds as to cultural music and see how the Islanders flex to it each year. I think the DJs should visit T&T for the Carnival season to see how the DJs over there let loose on all music. Tall Pree's album is a plus to me and I'm sure his fans will agree. Favourite tracks include "Old Lady," and "Pound a Rice" featuring Tangler and "Chala Dulahini."- T.E.

PRINCE MALACHI
Watch Over We
(RAS Records)

If you enjoy the type of reggae music that we have heard from the late Crown Prince of Reggae, Dennis Brown, and other reggae superstars like Luciano and Barrington Levy, then you will find this album right up there with the likes of those artists. Prince Malachi has, with a strong line-up of well-established musicians, produced a consciously refreshing sounding album. It has crossover appeal on an international scale. Easy on the ear, and fitting for any kind of setting, Malachi's smooth, rootsy, flow on tracks like "Look Around" and "Watch Over We," "Universal Pain," and "River Nile" will likely keep this artist's name in high circulation. - Lynden Vassell

SHAGGY
Hot Shot
(Universal)

Mr. Lover Lover has returned with a winner. The album, more appropriately, should be called Hot Shots. Shaggy does not disappoint with his unique blend of R &B, Pop, Reggae/Dancehall vibes, as this may be his most outstanding album yet. It is loaded with numerous outstanding tracks and is as good a party album as you will get coming from a single source. Shaggy's recipe: a little bit of this and a little bit of that. The result is Mr. Bombastic has taken the slow jams like "Leave It To Me" to another level and tracks like "Keep'n It Real," "Hey Love," "Dance & Shout," and the title track "Hot Shot," with their instant appeal will ensure that this artist becomes a staple in your musical diet. Shaggy delivers like only he can with an album that is bound to capture new audiences worldwide.- L.V.

LINVAL THOMPSON
Ride On Dreadlocks 1975 & 77
( Blood & Fire Ltd)

This is another re-issue covering an integral part of the reggae dancehall era during the 1970s.This was a time which saw scores of artists toasting the microphone at a time when the dub side of a single was as hot as side A.This artist, with his unique way of phrasing, quickly propelled himself up in the ranks to become one of the premiere dancehall singers during the Seventies. Lyrics which championed the dreadlocks man, his struggles, and truths and rights, were Thompson's mainstay as he went on to self-produce a slew of hits captured here in fine form. With the revival of dub music, this compilation makes for a strong release with its bass heavy rhythms and high hat and extended versions. Hits include "Ride On Dreadlocks," "Jah Jah Is I Guiding Star," and "Don't Cut Off Your Dreadlocks." - L.V.

This duo has long been the innovators of many of reggae music's most potent grooves. With their street-level vibes, Sly & Robbie has linked up with Monty to recreate a dynamic sound with some timeless jazz classics, played unlike you've ever heard. The potency of drum and bass alongside Monty's piano virtuoso is pure decadence fit for any occasion. The jazzy reggae dancehall style flavour makes this CD difficult to put down. "Monty's Groove," "People Make The World Go Round," and "Mercy, Mercy" will make you say just that. Put this one at the top of your A-list.- Lynden Vassell

ISRAEL VIBRATION
Jericho ( RAS Records )

When I think of this group, the song that I believe has solidified their rank amongst the great reggae groups of past and present is "Rudeboy Shufflin'"- thus setting the stage for high expectations. The Don-like cool delivery over a solid drum and bass rhythm laced with a tight horn section, combines to meet all of those expectations in this latest album. This is Real Authentic roots reggae Sound (RAS). Instant standouts includes "Breeze A Blow," "Lost Souls," "Jammin," and "African Unification." This is a very solid production, ideal for your listening pleasure.- L.V.

Reggae Floor Fillers
(Music Club)

Straight out of the vault of the Trojan record label, this superb variety of reggae anthems are bound to take you back to the "rent-a-tile" rock steady dance hall days. Songs such as Dennis Brown's "Money In My Pocket," Delroy Wilson's "Better Must Come," "BigYouth's cover of Ray Charles' "Hit The Road Jack, and the Tennors "Ride Your Donkey" will move you over and over again. No weak link in this line-up. This collection has depth, like the magical and sentimental track "Kingston Town," in its original splendor, done by Lord Creator. No props required here. See for yourself. (It would be too easy to give you the answer as to what is rent-a-tile. You'll get a better appreciation if you ask a friend or someone familiar with the reggae rock steady dance era.)- L.V.

KWESI SELASSIE The Lion of Africa
Judgement Day
(Lion-of-Africa Productions )

If you have not heard of Kwesi's music before, then you are in for a treat. This multi-lingual artist based out of Toronto has been one of the fastest rising stars on the world music stage. In this, now his fourth self-written, self produced album, Selassie combines what he calls High Life music with Reggae, Dub and a touch of Dancehall, alongside superstar deejay Buju Banton in combination on three tracks.
The energy-filled high life tracks are bound to move you and the reggae tracks with their universal themes will draw many comparisons to another great reggae star from Africa by the name of Alpha Blondy. This Lion is not one which is likely to strike fear into your heart but rather to add a bit of bounce to your steps and sweet music to your ears. Standouts include "Araba," "Akwantu Mu Wu," "Judgement Day," and "Konkonsanyi."- L.V.

Reggae Vibes
(Jamdown Records)

Another strong compilation of dancehall reggae vibes illustrating the range of the music and skillful adaptation of the deejays on board. The styles vary from the ominous sounding rhythm on "No Like What A Gwaan," highlighted by Anthony B; to the Marvin Gaye signature tune "Let's Get It On," courtesy of Richie Stephens & Degree; to the R&B up-tempo dancehall flavour of "What I Can Do " by Tanto Metro & Devonte along with Natch. This collection leans more towards the style of R&B but is certainly juggling ready for any dance hall bash. Check out "Assett," "Papa Proud," "Baby Let's Do It," and more.- L.V.

HORACE ANDY
Living In The Flood
(Melankolic/Virgin Records Ltd.)

After decades of being in the business, Horace Andy illustrates that he has not lost the touch. With his unmistakable uniquely soulful singing style and conscious vibes, it is easy to see why this musician has stood the test of time. The varied reggae grooves range from mellow, rootsy tracks to a more soulful R&B type of sound. Overall, this CD provides a smooth ride with an infectious character, which seems better each time played. With the solid backing of talented musicians and tight sound on this album, devoted fans of Horace Andy will not be disappointed.

The Kings & Queens of Rocksteady
(Music Collection International Ltd.)

To really appreciate where reggae music is at and the roads it has traveled, it is necessary to revisit its beginnings. Some might classify this segment as the "golden age" which bridged the gap between ska and the genres within the reggae music we hear today. This segment, known as the rocksteady era, filled with romantic ballads and rich soulful voices, became a trademark of the Treasure Isle label. This 15-track compilation is definitely a collector's dream, synonymous with striking gold. These classic tracks like "Girl I've Got A Date," "Moonlight Lover," "On The Beach," "Queen Majesty," and "Boom Shaka Laka," are bound to delight. Well recommended.

VARIOUS
Dancehall Vibes
(Jamdown Records)

Jamdown records seems to have the "Midas Touch" when it comes to the dancehall mixes. This, another one in the series of "bashment" juggling tunes, is no different. This compilation, which includes hip-hop and dancehall mixes, rhythmically covers a lot of ground. The lively revamped rhythm of Gloria Estevan's "Rhythm Of The Night" is a refreshing dancehall vibe which features Cobra, Powerman, and Delly Ranks. Other standouts include Buccaneer, Professor Nuts and Lady Saw. Devonte & Mack Turner wraps up this dancehall collection with a "wicked" track called "Buck A Gal."

SEKOU SUNDIATA
Longstoryshort
(Righteous Babe Records Inc.)

Whether adding fuel to a rhythm which seems like the backdrop for the theme from "Shaft" by Isaac Hayes; musically painting the "bluesy" picture of a John Coltrane session; or rejoicing to celebratory freedom of Nelson Mandela presented in a township jive format, Sundiata's voice, depth, and presentation, beckons to be heard. This poet will leave you in awe. "Reparations," in its jazzy format, is a terse thought-provoking social commentary on America that is likely to leave you, like a pinball machine, on TILT. The title track is astounding both musically and poetically. While it is easy to be seduced by the rhythmic qualities of the tracks, the double edged poems laid down on this CD, packs heavyweight punches that will leave you in a state of vertigo.&nbspYou'll be wanting more, while at the same time wanting it to stop. Too much, too deep to be devoured in one sitting.
